Uncivilized - Barbes Residency 3 of 3

Led by composer and guitarist Tom Csatari (distantly related to Gabor Szabo), Uncivilized features players from New York’s jazz, folk, pop and experimental corners. It plays song-based music that’s pastoral and foremost raw. The imperfections — and risk-filled surprises — enhance an element that’s indescribable in the songs, which hints at something deceptively simple, unique, and local — but definitely not definable. With tints of 70s folk-jazz, bebop, and American Primitive, Uncivilized mark out their own corner on the fringes of American Music, operating with what the New York Times calls “its own, fuzzy, folky, big-hearted thing”. That “thing,” among other principles, manifests as a romping groove vessel with strings, percussion, clarinets, and flutes to tell their earthen trance stories — Csatari’s vagabond guitar at the helm.

"Tom & Lee" at Bar Lunatico

Bar LunÁtico warmly welcomes Tom & Lee for their Bed Stuy debut! Levon Henry on saxophones and Tom Csatari on guitar. These two young musicians are each making serious waves in New York City and beyond. We are thrilled to have them join forces here in a spirited duo that splits the difference between the folk and jazz genres, exploring the nooks of old American songs as well as new explorative original songs inspired by the likes of Mississippi John Hurt, Bob Dylan, Thelonious Monk, John Fahey and Duke Ellington — all the while maintaining a spirit of risk and adventure.

---
Platinum Blues is like a female-led version of the Basement Tapes, but with better technology and clarity — having been recorded in a living room at the Tiny Montgomery Records Studio in Flatbush, Brooklyn in 2016 — featuring the songwriting of Bay Area-bred dream-soul songstress Ivy Meissner. The album features 10 original songs produced and recorded by Julian Cubillos, with one featuring the Experimental Americana Orchestra “Uncivilized”, and fine woodwind arranging work from Levon Henry throughout.

There is a raw feeling from the core backing band on the record — who are featured prominently on most of the other releases on the Tiny Montgomery label — hitting on Memphis-based inflections and heavier Americana backdrops that are loose and full of life like sessions in Nashville, but with a folkier, more psychedelic quality.

The whole album has a 70s sepia hue that you don’t normally hear coming out of the Brooklyn independent music scene, what with Ms. Meissner’s phantasmagorically rough and husky voice, bringing us back to Janis and Joni, but also to some of the jangle and flange of 80s rock-pop and even surf rock. It’s a special sort of bluesy, breezy, rustic pop that is encapsulated concisely and expansively on this debut release.

Julian Cubillos // Jib Kidder // Tom Csatari Band

An evening with three American songscapers: the punk-jazz maestro Julian Cubillos (rough and dreamy singer-songwriter soul); the shimmering blues architect Jib Kidder (purposeful and ecstatic); and the ten-piece roots organelle, Tom Csatari Band (wall-of-sound folk/jazz instrumentals).

The night also marks a celebration of the Tiny Montgomery Records spring split-single release "Bon Courage” — featuring unique tracks from Cubillos and Csatari.

“Outro Waltz” Release Show @ Manhattan Inn

“Outro Waltz” — Tom Csatari Band [TM07: Digital / Repurposed 12” LP Download Code*]

“Outro Waltz” is an experimental roots double-album featuring a folk-jazz sextet under the direction of guitarist, composer, and environmentalist Tom Csatari (pronounced CHUH-TAR-EE). “Side A” (studio tracks) features original instrumental songs that are concise and explorative. “Side B” features covers of songs from a wide-ranging group of American songwriters (Elliot Smith, Lee Morgan, Thelonious Monk, and others), recorded the day after the studio tracks at the Manhattan Inn’s backroom in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

It’s something like crossing America by foot and by sail, experiencing the gradient through sound along the way, with arborous strings; electronic stardust effects; husky woodwinds; lilting rhythm; and Csatari’s Gabor Szabo-like vagabond guitar at the helm. In short, an album to compliment the motion of the everyday, or invite the color of movement into more meditative moments.

*Physical copies will be available as repurposed 12” Vinyl LPs with affixed download codes and liner notes.

Cantina // Julian Cubillos // Tom Csatari Band @ Union Pool

On Sunday, April 19th, we will host a springtime hang, a musical jubilee if you will, at  Union Pool in Brooklyn.

Performances will include TM’s own Tom Csatari and Julian Cubillos; the former a swirling orchestra of drone-pop folk-jazz and the latter a NY via LA dream-soulscaper, both coming fresh off their most fully-realized albums to date.

Headlining the bill is Cantina, a mysterious blend of tropical and surreal; dreamy folk and shoegazey atmospherics.

Together, these three bands will make for a rich and vivid eclecticism – an embracing Sunday night boogie to close the weekend.

The evening will run from 8-11pm and cost 8 dollars American.
